THANKZZZzzzz

in celebration of eating and slaving away in kitchens! dedicated to those of us who aren't afraid to unbutton our pants or move our belt buckles over (or to take them off altogether.) i think the most extreme length i had to go to was when i was wearing this high-waisted skirt (stupid 1950's) and it only had a button closure. so i unbuttoned it and made my family swear to remind me to button it when we got out of the restaurant... but then i couldn't button it because i was full so my dad asked the waitress for a safety pin (they didn't have one.) i ended up nonchalantly holding it shut while i took a walk outside to digest. don't let it happen to you. happy thanksgiving.

like my previous post on people wearing prints of people, funny that you could decorate your kitchen with its likeness (or what one wanted it to be)

i made this drawing at egg last saturday when i had the spankin' awesome chance to meet up with nicole of fashion forestry, her husband pierre, and blogger olivia, who hails from queens!!! we all split a molasses milkshake and agreed that it was pretty much heaven.

fabulous funghi

i went through a terribly obsessive mushroom phase a few years ago... people started referring to me as "the girl who draws gnomes and mushrooms". i still love them but it has simmered down to make way for other things to love (POODLES.) nonetheless, i love to look at mushrooms, eat mushrooms after i cook the mushrooms, so why not wear mushrooms?

isn't this 30's feedsack so very snow white?

duck and cover

continuing with the theme of bright fabrics to cheer one up in drab weather, here are some creatures who decided that yes, an umbrella is useful for even them.

palmy

it is a far cry from tropical weather here yet i find myself gravitating towards these palm tree-ish fabrics.

i guess these could be black-eyed susans but i like to think they're palm trees.

hurricane! monsoon! gale force winds!

near and far

oh man. let's cut straight to it: how cool are these 1940's rayon shorts with their san francisco novelty print??? it's like history! on yer arse! behold these locale-themed fabrics:

this one concerns alaska's admission to the states in 1959

something to do with kansas... if anyone knows what this one commemorates, let me know! or maybe it's sheer state pride.

to foreign lands: venice!

and of course paris! here we have a border print that would have made a great skirt or even cafe curtains... so you can pretend you're in france when you're at home eating dinner in the suburbs...

round we go

an assortment of whirls, swirls, and medallions (or more bluntly, a bunch of round things):

pinky swear

certain colors are inextricably bound with certain eras. this marvelously creamy pink basically equals 1940's in my brain. the 1930's had a milky blue, the 1970's was all ochre. but we are here today to ogle at this pink!

cold and smooth

nooo, i'm not talking about some fancy beer, i'm talking about RAYON! cold, slippery, heavy rayon. when i'm going through racks or piles of vintage at shops or the flea market, it's the distinct feel of this fabric that makes me stop in my tracks to pull out what i've found (if only to admire!) it drapes incredibly well and feels great to wear in the summer compared to other synthetics. these are all from the 1940's.
